Brian and Abs

My name is Brian and I’m an American living here in rural Norfolk (my pronouns are he/him). I moved here 8 years ago to be with my British husband, and we have since adopted two boys and most and a dog to complete our family.

I was recently diagnosed with hEDS after seeing a plethora of private specialist and spending a crazy amount of money. I also have ADHD which I’ve learned is quite common with hypermobility. In addition, I have been HIV+ since 2005, so living with a chronic condition is something I’m very familiar with.

I’m a Secondary school teacher, specialising in PSHE. I also lead the mental health program at my school, where I started a pilot program with the NHS and local charities to address the long wait times young people have in accessing mental health services.

Back in The States, I led support groups and community collaboratives for HIV+ adults and young people in addition to Teen Pregnancy Prevention work. I’m really passionate about community collaboration and empowering people to be advocates for their personal health.

I wanted to volunteer with EDS UK because I know how alone and dismissed I felt by so many people. I wish I had help while going through the many health problems that led to my diagnosis, so I wanted to give back and help others. I’m very resourceful, so don’t be shy with asking me for something. If you have an idea for a meeting topic or event, let’s it happen!

Looking forward to meeting and working with everyone!
