Dr Matt Westerman presented his latest paper on Neurobiological and neuropsychological disturbance in EDS and talked through the findings.

Dr Matt Westerman is a Cognitive Neuroscientist and Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Manchester. He completed his PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Huddersfield, where he investigated how the brain makes decisions under uncertainty with a specific focus on the visual cortex. He now works with Dr Alex Kafkas on an MRC-funded project examining the role of central brain regions, particularly the thalamus, in memory and cognition. Alongside this, Matt conducts research into the neuropsychological effects of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and the concept of pre-salience, a proposed mechanism that describes how the brain anticipates and prioritises information before conscious awareness. He has been clinically diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and aims to bridge neurological, psychological, and clinical perspectives to improve understanding and patient care.

Professor Ravindran will be discussing a multidisciplinary systems approach to pain management in EDS and hypermobility including medicinal cannabis.

Professor Deepak Ravindran has over 20 years of experience in helping people overcome their pain – in the NHS and private practice. He is a Hon Professor at the Teesside university, Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, and a Consultant in Pain Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine. He presently serves as the Director for Pain and Lifestyle medicine at the Reading Central PCN. He is one of the few consultants in the UK who possesses triple certification in lifestyle medicine, musculoskeletal medicine and pain medicine. H

He has been a consultant in pain medicine from 2010-2024 at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in the UK. He is passionate about pain education and improving pain and health literacy and the author of the Amazon Best Seller, the Pain Free Mindset. His Youtube channel aimed at providing good health information is approved by Youtube Health, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and WHO FIDES network.
